Before the Boulevard and Linden Houses were built, we lived at 651 Elton Street (cor. New Lots) from 1943-51. Nothing extended past Linden Boulevard, and we called that area "the swamps." In fact, for many years I thought that "New Lots" referred to all the vacant lots that extended from behind "the car barns" (up the street past the New Lots Ave. IRT terminal) right through to Jamaica Bay. My grandmother lived in the Boulevard Houses in the Sixties, and my family lived in the Linden Houses (630 Stanley) from 1957 through 1968. Between '51 and '57, we lived in Brownsville, where the only vacant space was a lot behind the I.J. Morris Funeral Home. I never ceased to be amazed at all the wide open space in ENY.
