For something that plays such an important part in our lives, from
determining the kind of classes we take in school to the jobs we're suited
for, intelligence is an awfully hard concept to get a handle on. Is
intelligence just "book learning," or does it also include common sense? Does
being intelligent mean that you're better than others at dealing with people
and coping with problems, as one recent best-seller suggests? Or is it the
ability to ace math problems and resolve spatial conundrums with ease?
If intelligence is so hard to define, no wonder it's even more difficult to measure. Since the Stanford-Binet IQ (intelligence quotient) test came into wide use in the early part of this century, countless IQ tests have been developed, each purporting to be the best. And now we're deluged with specialized tests that gauge everything from your emotional IQ to your political IQ.
OMNI has offered its share of IQ tests over the years, and they've been one of our most popular features. Now, with the help of Virtual Entertainment, we do so again. Try your hand at the 20 multiple-choice questions below, selected from Virtual Entertainment's More IQ Test CD-ROM, which measures a variety of different abilities including verbal, numerical, and inductive reasoning. For each question, click on the box next to the answer you think is correct. When you're done, click on the Score button, and your IQ will be instantly computed.
A caveat: Like most IQ tests, ours is not intended to be definitive. And because we're presenting just a third of the More IQ Test's 60 questions, our test won't be as accurate as the one on the CD-ROM. What our test will give you is an approximation of your IQ as defined by Virtual Entertainment. So limber up your thinking muscles and your mouse-clicking fingers, and enjoy!
