One of the most challenging tasks, notes Gardiner, was reproducing a 10th century castle on the island. "In doing the research for this," Gardiner explains, "I found old engravings of what the castle looked like originally, and they enabled me to reconstruct what is seen. I wanted to take you back in time to what it would have been like to live and work around there. On a cold November evening, the only light would have been fire, with the sounds of people being tortured in the dungeons."
Once the layers of color and texture were in place on the digital frame, Gardiner used software to "walk around his creation" inside the computer, taking a series of digital snapshots from various perspectives. "By taking these photographs within that computer generated space," Gardiner explains, "you're able to stitch together what you'll see on the screen."
