The Isle of Purbeck
Web Demo

Jeremy Gardiner's CD-ROM sketchbook/tour of the Isle of Purbeck was assembled in Macromedia Director. What we've done here is extract a selection of the images from the CD-ROM and use them to build a web-based reproduction of the experience. Gardiner's CD provides in-depth immersion into six different locales on the Isle: Handfast Point, Corfe Castle, Creech Arch, St. Aldhelm's Chapel, Athelhampton Court Garden, and the Durlston Globe. He evokes each spot with still images, sound clips, and a navigable virtual-reality 3-D window. We've only recreated one of those locations -- the enigmatic Durlston Globe at the middle left portion of the screen -- in complete form; the other five locales are represented only by their opening pages in our demo. We've aimed to give you a taste of what Gardiner's CD has to offer, and we think we've succeeded, but there's no substitute for the whole thing. If you like what you see here, you'll want to take the full trip with Gardiner's CD.

The opening page of the demo offers a collage "menu" of the six Purbeck locales -- just click on the one you want to visit. When you come to the Durlston Globe, you'll see that it offers "2-D" and "3-D" options. Go to 2-D to see a selection of still images of the globe from different vantages and at different times of day and year. Go to 3-D for the virtual reality window. As you steer around the panoramic 3-D view, your cursor will occasionally become an arrow, indicating the presence of another "node" -- if you click twice when the arrow appears, your perspective will shift to that new position, so you can view the scene from another point of view.

Our demo version uses nothing but standard HTML, so it should be accessible to just about anyone on the web. The only place where you'll need anything extra is the 3-D section, which uses a QuickTime VR clip that requires the QuickTime player (version 2.1.2) to view. If you don't have this version of the QuickTime player, you can download it here:

Enjoy your stay on the Isle! And don't forget to check out the credits, to see whose hard work made this gorgeous virtual tour possible!
