Bentwaters Air BaseBentwaters Royal Air Force base opened in 1944. (It was named after a house which was located on the site of the main runway.) In the early years, Spitfires and Meteors flew missions from the base. In 1951, the U.S. Air Force moved in, and during the next three decades the base was home to the 7506th Air Support Group and the 81st Fighter-Interceptor Wing. During this time, F-4 Phantoms and F-16s blasted off from the airfield. The base was closed in 1993.
