Clarion East Writers Workshop, run until recently by SF legends Kate Wilhelm and Damon Knight, takes place in Lansing, Michigan every summer. The six week program has been called "bootcamp for writers" and may important sf and fantasy writers have come from the graduating ranks. During the fifth week, a professional editor comes for the weekend to talk about writing from an editor's point of view.

Clarion West Writers' Workshop the sister to the above, is an excellent writers' workshop specializing in sf and fantasy, which takes place annually in Seattle, Washington. Each week, a different professional writer teaches the class of about 20 students. The fifth week, a professional editor takes over the class for the entire week. The page gives information on applying, and a brief bio of each of the instructors for the 1997 class.

The Commonplace Review is Robert G. Buice Jr.'s eclectic take on various genre stories, anthologies, and novels.

Critters Workshop is an online workshop/critique group for science fiction, fantasy and horror writers. To have your work reviewed you must have reviewed a certain percentage of prior weeks' works. Also has links to other writer resources.

Fantasy, SF, and Horror Calendar: If you're interested in finding out what's going on in your local area, Elizabeth Willey's site is for you.

HorrorNet is a rich resource for information on horror fiction. The site includes reviews, articles, message boards, interviews, and links.

Horror Writers Association homepage, which is still under construction, contains membership information and information on the major horror award, the Bram Stoker.

Index to Science Fiction Anthologies and Collections: William G. Contento's updated online version of his 1978 Index to Science Fiction Anthologies and Collections is a useful reference tool.

Infinity Plus is a site put together by British writer Keith Brooke, devoted to reprinting professional short fiction by writers such as James Patrick Kelly, Stephen Baxter, and Ian McDonald, book reviews, novel excerpts, book reviews, links,etc.

The International Horror Guild is an organization founded by writer Nancy Collins that gives out annual awards for horror. Anyone can vote.

The Literary Dictionary allows you to find words that first made an appearance in books, plays, poems, comic strips and mythology. With a list of words (like Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky) that haven't made it--at least not yet.

Odyssey is the annual summer writing workshop for sf, fantasy, and horror held at New Hampshire College. It's run by World Fantasy Award-winning editor and writer Jeanne Cavelos with guest lecturers coming in one day a week.

The Penn State Science Fiction Consortium runs a website devoted to running interviews with sf professionals (myself included), biographies for well-known and lesser-known contributors to the field, articles on science as they relate to sf, original sf, and original art.

Resources for horror writers

Salon is an online magazine about books--mostly contemporary mainstream books--containing upcoming titles, articles, and discussions.

The Science Fiction Book Club now has a website.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America homepage (SFFWA): If you want to write SF, fantasy, or horror check out the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America homepage (SFFWA). SFFWA is an essential organization to be aware of. The page gives membership requirements, important information on contracts, a history of the Nebula Awards, information on writing and on breaking into print, etc.

The SF Site is an ambitious and useful resource for readers of sf, fantasy, and horror in all media, but focussing on print. Included on this attractive and easy to navigate site are reviews of books, movies, print magazines and e-zines, author and artist links.

Spicy Green Iguana is an attractive and useful speculative fiction resource site.

Star Makers is a very useful site that provides news about written sf in the United Kingdom.

Stories/Books Online is run by Jim Freund, one of our OMNI VISION interview hosts. It has links to a variety of fiction made available online ranging from The Song of Roland and The Blue Fairy Books to Terry Bisson's short fiction and Hakim Bey's TZ:The Temporary Autonomous Zone.

StoryWeb reviews all kinds of stories presented on the web. The reviews are broken down by genre into adventure, sf, fantasy, horror, romance, kids, comedy, etc.

For Writers Only is maintained by Jack Beslanwitch. It has some very useful links for writers.

Writers Market Webzine is an invaluable index of print and web science fiction, fantasy, horror, and cross-genre magazines with their guidelines, subscription info, and a link to each magazine's homepage.
