I just spent an hour reviewing this guestbook!! So many memories came rushing back. Lived at 381 Pennsylvania Ave. and went to PS 182 until 6th grade in 1966. Was disappointed not to see any names of old friends. Is anyone out there from Stanley Eisenberg's 6th grade class. Would love to find Barry Fried, Scott Flamm, Martin Kahn, Jean Jones, Roy Williams. Was good to see that so many people did what I, too, have done, and gotten off the Belt and taken a ride through the old neighborhood. Was there this summer. So many things gone and changed, but the area looked well maintained, new housing. Would love to hear from anyone from those days.

Hi, I love to check in and read the new postings. I lived at 756 Stanley Ave and 225 Wortman ave until 1965. Went to 273, Gershwin and graduated TJHS in 1964. Last Oct. my sister Lois and I drove all through both Linden and Boulevard projects and I was surprised to see how little it had changed. We drove by Jefferson and spoke to a woman outside who works there. She said the school had had its problems but was on the upswing now. It was so great to see the old neighborhood again. I would have loved to knock on the door of our old apt and seen the inside. I used to hang out at the circle behind 225 Wortman with Marlene Blum Michelle Freiman, Phil (Peachy)Zweibel, Richie Abramowitz, Tadpole, Janet Lovitt, Gail Bush, Bonnie Salter, Charlotte Kalb. We were totally flabbergasted when we discovered this wonderful, nostalgic web site of East New York .. TJHS and Gershwin. My husband and I savored every message and boy, did it bring back warm memories of the “ole neighborhood” such as Nino’s Pizzeria ( 15c for a slice and 10c for a coke.. we are dating ourselves), the Biltmore where folded used up pop corn boxes flew around the silver screen or while waiting for the movies we used to watch TV through the windows at Bressners. Anyway, Bonnie Mevorah ( now Bonnie Lemis) lived on Linden Blvd and Wyona ( TJHS 69) and my husband Marc Lemis ( with the french accent) lived on Pennsylvania Ave. off New Lots (TJHS 66) would love to hear from anyone who remembers us and we would also like to hear from anyone who doesn’t LOL.. I lived at a large apartment building at 591 Williams Ave during the early 60's. Remember Fortunoffs complex on Livonia Ave when it took over 5 block, both sides from Williams to Pennsylvania Ave. My parents were the supers of the building. Moved to 630 Dumont Ave and then to 541 Miller Ave between Dumont and Blake Ave across from the park. Remember watching the 'el' passing our apartment on the third floor. Great since we were kids. Remember street stick ball, skelly (if you have to ask, you don't know what it is), ring-a-leeveo, punch ball, boodies up, box ball, making skooters out of wooden (real wood) milk crates and a metal roller skate with metal wheels, when Pennsylvania Ave did not have a Starrett City (it rode like a roller coaster with all of its humps), when they had real cows at the Sunnyvale Farms at Linden Blvd and Pennsylvania Ave. and Dodge ball. Brings back a lot of good memories. Went to Brooklyn Automotive High School in Greenpoint. Hope this brings back some similiar memories.

Attended George Gershwin JHS and graduated in 1966. Went to Thomas Jefferson from 1967-1971 and then to Harpur College. Got into the Guinness Book in 1990 as the world's fastest reader and created Mega Speed Reading program. Wrote two books, "Super Reading Secrets" for Time-Warner, and "Speed Reading the Easy Way" for Barron's Books. Also, do you remember Cissi, Joey and Kenny my cousins who lived in 363 Wortman AVe. Do you remember how we use to play punch ball, double dutch, skelly. Sit out on the benches and play those 45's record (laugh) I know some of you know what I'm talking about. Has anybody seen Larry Reed, Biggie tall light skin brother, Michael Sullivan, Ricky Huggies.Girl, name Penny she use to live in 359 also on the first floor (white girl) her family knew us very well (smile). Do you remember the Paul's Variety store on Stanley Ave. The Cozy Bar, Speedway, Pete and Marty candy store. Do you remember when they use to play music in Gershwin Park, and we would play hand ball. Walk to Weston Hamburger Place and Penn Mall Shopping Center. All of my sister went to PS273 and JHS 166 and Thomas Jefferson , Karen only went to Thomas Jefferson and graduate in 74. I know someone out there knows us I can be sure of that. I can go on for a long time but, I have to say good-bye now. Hi East New Yorkers. I grew up in ENY from 1945-64. I lived on Snediker Ave, attended the Snediker Ave Park Nursery School, attended PS 190, Gershwin, and Graduated TJHS, class of '63. I was a member of Pack 48, Troop 48 as well as the Explorers, attending meetings At the American Legion Hall.I attended New Lots Talmed Torah where I had my Bar Mitzvah. My most memorable teachers were those handful that made such a strong impression on my life, such as my dear friend in later life, Rhoda Olanoff Pollack, let her rest in peace, Ed Greenberg, both from Gershwin, as well as my two intrumental music teachers at Jefferson, Jack Levine & Takeru Ijima. It given the chance I could write for hours about the memories that I hold dear to my heart in ENY. Whenever I meet someone from ENY, even if we don't know one another, the memories that we both share of that unique location in Brooklyn can keep us talking forever.I spent my most memorable three years in the instrumental music class at Gershwin in classes 7-6, 8-6, 9-6. As a group all of us stayed together. Many of us continued our friendships in HS. If any of you are out there let me hear from you.

After attending the funeral of my 96 year old grandmother, in Brooklyn, my mom and I went to see ENY. Linden Houses look beautiful!!! The trees,that were twigs when we were growing up, have bloomed into magnificent landscapes. It was almost impossible for us to see the other buildings. Even the turtle, benches,etc., in front of my building,(195 Cozine Avenue,) have not aged a day!!! What did change were the windows on all the buildings. Each of them now have bars on the bottom half. Unlike when we were growing up most have air conditioners. Although it's been 31 years since I moved out of ENY the old wonderful feelings are still alive.

i lived at 767 miller ave, between new lots and hegeman. went to 213, 166 and graduated jefferson in 62. looking for the crowd from miller avenue and around the neighborhood: eddie foster, arthur zachary, iris baum, and anyone who was in the 7sp and 9sp at gershwin during 58 and 59. i remember very well nino's pizza, the biltmore theater, linden general hospital on new lots avenue, blake bakery on blake avenue, menorah bakery, abe's grocery store, mr. camp's vegetable store, dancing on the terrace at the "Y" during the summer, the hostess club at jeff, boosters at jeff, twirlers at the "Y". the list is endless and emotional. passed some of the old streets on the way to a party and i cried. it was the best childhood in the world. everyones mother watched out for you. with a spalding ball and a high li paddle you were king ..... would love to hear from anyone who remembers me

432 Montauk Ave, between Hegeman and New Lots, was my home from birth, 1944, to 1960 when we moved far away... to Flatbush. Although I didn't live in a project, my best friend did, Neil Hay. He lived in the Cypress Project. I went to PS 202, 1957, and Franklin K. Lane H.S. 1961. Some of my clear recollections of ENY are: +All the adults sitting outside at night on aluminum folding chairs, gossiping. +Watching Milton Berle on Tuesdays on our neighbor's TV (we had none). +Riding my bike far away to a little weight lifting shop owned by Jack LaLane. +Our first TV, a Philco, maybe 10", every time you changed stations you had to adjust 4 knobs to bring the picture back in. +My earliest awareness of girls, Norma Bernstein, 5th grade +Driving to Long Island with my family to a new shopping place called Green Acres Mall. +Mr. Puglese's farm across the street. Don't hit any balls in there! +Coming home every day for lunch from P.S. 202. +Placing 3rd in the 100 yd dash on Field Day in the 6th grade. +Being demoted in 7th grade because I got too many Charges. +Soft twisted pretzels dipped in spicy mustard, 8 cents. +Going to New York City alone by subway to visit the Gilbert Hall of Science. +Spending the summers of 1957 and 1958 in Rockaway (that's Queens, not NJ) in a bungalow on Beach 38th Street. +My first paying job delivering groceries at Harry's Grocery Store on Edgemere Ave. in Rockaway. +Waiting on Sutter Ave. every morning for the school bus to take us to Franklin K. Lane H.S. +Playing King-Queen and Johnny-on-the-Pony on the corner of Montauk and Hegeman. +Going to Radio City Music Hall with my family every Christmas morning (yes, everyone in the place was Jewish). +Working on Saturdays at my Father's luncheonette, Lesser Brothers. It was on the busy corner of Flatbush & Nostrand right around the corner from Brooklyn College. +Going to the Blake Ave. push-cart market with my Father every Sunday morning. +Driving my Father's new 1960 Oldsmobile when I was 16 (God, was I nervous). +Taking my girlfriend out for a driving lesson on that car (on the Belt too) without telling my Father (well, I did marry her). I recently found Hal (Hazzy) Alpert and Neil Hay, but where are my other good friends: Michael Sussel, Eddie Kaponer, Jack Edwards, Gerry Waldon, Sharon Leventhal, Sheldon Gelfand, Joel Cohen, Arnie Moskowitz. To all my old friends from ENY, I just got back to Israel after a short visit to the States, and of course, I could not resist visiting the old neighborhood of ENY, and no, I did not take a bodyguard with me. I saw lots of my old favorite sites, and actually went in some of them. For example, PS 273 on Jerome St. was open one sunny afternoon, and I went inside and had a nice conversation with the Principal, who in my days was Alexander P. Nevin, but today is Barbara Alfred, who was kind enough to escort me to the Auditorium, so I could see it again after umpteen years, the place we had our Assembly meetings, where we did our drama plays in 5th and 6th grades, My Fair Lady and South Pacific, the place my band used to practice in, and the place we used to patrol as Service Squad members who kept everybody quiet. I had to produce ID to get in the building, the NYC cops have a permanent desk posted there at the entry. I also visited Starret City which was not up in those days, and went to see Rabbi German in his new Yeshiva Beerot Hagola, a beautiful building on Louisiana Ave., and visited Hendrix St., his old synagogue, which is now a Baptist Church, and also visited my old addresses at 920 and 816 Ashford St., and also went past Gershwin JHS 166. I even drove down to New Lots Ave. to the subway station, the elevated line, and past the library where I used to be held up for a dime by the local tough kids, so all those memories came back too. What can I say, I got it out of my system with this visit, it was very eye-opening and you can see lots of changes. I recommend it for all.Would be glad to fill in more details but don't want to bore you, drop me a line if you feel like catching up. Regards to all.

I want to address complaints about this guest list: The ENY website cannot help but be invaded, since it has been linked from the Brooklyn Public Library and other Brooklyn web sites. Those links help our friends find this site, but they also attract the attention of those who just want to cause trouble or post profanities all over the Internet. Every so often I go through and clean out the weird stuff, but I haven't in awhile. I will get to it again, but in the meantime, if anyone would like to volunteer for the job of going through this list and editing out the posts that clearly are disruptive or inappropriate, let me know. I grew up in East New York on New Jersey Ave. between Blake and Dumont Ave. Finished Grade School at St. John Cantius ,High School at Bishop Loughlin '57. Anyone out there from the old neighborhood? I remember fondly Momma Caputo's Pizza , The Biltmore, Premier and the Miller theaters & the toy store on Livonia Ave between Pennsylvania and Sheffield Ave's. Shopping on Blake Ave and buying food from the pushcarts, especially from Pete the "Bananna Man" and Itzak's Deli on the corner of Blake & N.J Ave. How about the bar on Sutter and Hinsdale?? Remember when Fortunoff's only store was on Livonia Ave under the elevated line. How about "Kitzel" park on Bradford St. and Blake Ave, the Silver Rod drug store on Sutter and Pennsylvania Ave's. Write if you are from the neighborhood.

Just wanted to say hey to all of my fellow Brooklynites from the ol way. I am a litle younger than most of you because I grew up in 225 Wortman Ave in the 80's. I do recall things mentioned like the Sunnydale supermarket, the traveling carnival that would come to Gershwin Park and Starret City, Linden Day and the victory gardens when it was safe to eat the vegetables. Oh man those were the days! I moved to ENY in the middle of 6th grade. Quite traumatic for me at the time. Lived in Fairfield Towers until moving to Canarsie by my college years. Went to Gershwin, Brooklyn Tech, Kingsboro, Brooklyn College and then moved to Chicago almost 22 years ago. I had some wild ENY days so memories are vague but Hi to all my pals from ENY. I had my share of fights with the Jr. Rowdies and most of ENY. Dean Hecht probably saved my life. Glad we mellowed as we got older. Hi ya all.

I signed on last night and in checking, I noticed that most of alumni were pretty young. I am a wee bit older,just in my late 70s I left Bklyn and went into the army and i came back near the end of 1943. I left Bklyn again in 1946 and I moved to Los Angelus.Married in Las Vegas.My kids Just made a 50th wedding anniversary party for my wife and me We have a New York alumni here.Our membership is about 15 thousand. But what it takes in is from all the hs and colleges from the whole state of N.Y. We have a very big reunion once a year in the month of Oct. we also honor a celeberty from the entertaiment industry This year it will be Lainie Kazan.It Would be a good time to have an alumni get together here. If anyone wants more info i will be happy to send it to you. Hi to all. Checking in again to give my new e-mail address and to add to Doris Kugler's recent message. I lived on Wyona St. & Riverdale Ave. from 1954-61. In addition to what Doris wrote, here's what else I remember from the old neighborhood: 1) There were several barber shops around but the 3 that I remember going to were a- Nathan Miller on Hegeman Ave. at Penna. Ave., b- Eugene (the Italian barber) on New Lots Ave. at Schenck Ave., c- Barber (forgot the name) on Miller Ave. at Riverdale Ave. 2) Toy store (not sure of the name) on New Lots Ave. between Penna. & New Jersey Aves. They had the greatest selection of model car and airplane kits. 3) How many of you can remember when Nino's was a very small pizzeria on the corner of Bradford & New Lots before they moved to the bigger place on New Lots between Wyona & Vermont Sts.? Then they moved to Cross Bay Blvd., I think in 1969-70. I hope there will be a reunion this summer. If anyone needs help coordinating it, count me in. Best regards.
