: : Before Fairfield and Starett City, Pennsylvania and Flatlands had a huge junkyard, Carvel (and a swamp behind it where people flew radio-controlled airplanes) and the Bat-a-Way and golf driving range. My friends and I used to swipe the rubber-covered hardballs from the Bat-a-Way because a regular horsehide-covered baseball wouldn't last a single inning on a paved schoolyard surface.
I remember those rubber coated hardballs we stole from Bat Away very well indeed. The problem of course, is that when hit hard they were unpredictable on ground balls. They would speed up on you if hit with topspin. Very hard to judge. I remember getting hit in the balls once with one of them. Yes indeed, I remember them well.

: I remeber going into those lots before the private houses were built. I was maybe 9 or 10 years old. We would catch snakes, rabbits & etc.
