No, Pam, I am pretty sure that the man on the roof and the attempted/committed rape was a true story. There were some witnesses, I recall, that lent credence to the story, and it happened in late '68-early '69, I believe. That was the beginning of the end of our idyll in the projects. I also recall a subsequent story of some older girl being dragged up to the roof of one of the fourteen story buildings -- I'm not sure if that tale was true. But after that made the rounds, our parents (who historically had been pretty laissez-faire about our running around the neighborhood, but could afford to be back then) cracked down on our ever going up to the roof. And the maintenance man in our building, Jimmy, for the first time in all the years I lived there at 245 Wortman, locked the door that led out to our roof.
