William S. Appleton, M.D., is a psychiatrist in private practice and a professor at the Harvard Medical School. He is the author of Practical Clinical Psychopharmacology, The Fifth Psychoactive Drug Usage Guide, and other books, and his column "The Analyst's Couch" ran for nine years in Cosmopolitan magazine. He lives in Cambridge, Massachussetts.
