Dr. Barrie R. Cassileth was a founding member of the Advisory Council to the National Institutes of Health Office of Alternative Medicine and is a member of the complementary and alternative medicine committee of the American Cancer Society. She is adjunct professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina, consulting professor of community and family medicine at Duke University, and is currently affiliated with the Harvard University School of Medicine. She lives in Truro, Massachusetts.
