On January 15, 1987 Lynnclaire Dennis lost consciousness while aboard a hot-air balloon over the Austrian Alps. During the near-death experience that followed she witnessed the incredible beauty of a highly dynamic and luminous structure that she calls the Pattern. The Pattern has fascinated scientists, psychologists, mathematicians and spiritual leaders throughout the world, including Louis H. Kauffman, professor of mathematics at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Professor Kauffman is an expert in the mathematics of knots, and it is because the Pattern appears to be a special kind of knot that he has become interested in Ms. Dennis's experience. Professor Kauffman is the author of five books on the theory of knots including On Knots (Princeton University Press), Knots and Physics (World Scientific Publishers) and is the editor of the Book Series on Knots and Everything published by World Scientific, and the founding editor of the Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications.
