Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D -- NY) has been one of the major forces behind the government's increase in funding for cancer research. At a time when many budgets are being downsized, Representative Lowey -- a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education -- has enabled the National Institutes of Health to receive a budget increase.
