Michael Marshall Smith was born in Cheshire, England, but spent most of his childhood in America, South Africa and Australia. After attending Cambridge University he earned a living as a graphic designer for several years while dabbling in radio comedy, but now works full-time as a novelist and screenwriter. He lives in North London. His short stories have been published in a variety of anthologies and magazines on both sides of the Atlantic, including many volumes of the Darklands, Dark Voices, Dark Terrors, Mammoth Best New Horror and The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror series -- along with Omni and Interzone. He is a three-time winner of the British Fantasy Award for Best Short Story, and has twice been nominated for the World Fantasy Award.

Smith's first novel, Only Forward, won the August Derleth Award, and Spares, his second novel, was recently published in the U.S. by Bantam ($22.95 hardcover); Spares has been optioned for film by Stephen Spielberg's company, DreamWorks SKG, and has sold translation rights in nine countries. Smith is currently working on his third novel, One of Us, a movie adaptation of Robert Faulcon's Nighthunter series, and a number of film and television projects as a partner in Smith & Jones Productions.
