Hello, everyone! Welcome to High Strangeness on Prime Time Live. My name is Patrick Huyghe and our guest this evening is Dennis William Hauck. Dennis is an authority on paranormal phenomena. Among other things he has consulted on such films as Mysteries of the Gods and Close Encoutners of the Third Kind. He is also the California Coordinator for the Ghost Research Society and Science Advisor to the MUTUAL UFO Network.

Tonight we'll talk to Dennis about Haunted Places. His latest book, just published by Penguin, is called Haunted Places: The National Directory. It gives details on more than 2,000 haunted places in our 50 states. While most people associate the word "haunted" with ghosts, Dennis means much more by the word "haunted." Can you explain why you use it to refer to UFO landings, bigfoot reports and other things?

Okay, Dennis. If you can explain why you include UFOs, Bigfoot, and other events--other than ghosts--in your definition of "Haunted"?

The paranormal is really another word for Exceptional Human Experience which includes all types of encounter-type, near-death, and psychic phenomena.

But in most cases people can't expect to go to these haunted places and actually see something paranormal, can they?

Most of these places are known for haunted activity that is still going on. I think there is a better chance of seeing something at these places than eleswhere!

How many of the 2,000 haunted places in your book have you actually visited?

I have been to nearly 300 sites in all states but Alaska and the Carolinas.

And what have you seen?

I have seen strange light patterns at outdoor UFO seances, as well as ghostly mists at indoor seances. I think that ghost and UFOs are basically the same phenomena or energy if you wish that is being interpreted in different ways by different people depending on their belief system, etc. The strangest thing I saw was an invisible six-fingered hand make claw marks on the side of a house in Grass Lake, IL. There were many sightings of UFOs and Bigfoot-type creatures by three families on the lake.

So is it the place or the person that "contributes" the most to a "haunted" experience?

The person is just as important as the place. There seems to be an energy impregnated there but you need a sensitive individual to see it.

I was sitting at a dining room table going over a woman's diary of what was going on when there was a thump on the side of the house. I looked out the dining room window and saw these invisible claw marks form. The people were seeing creatures running through their homes scratching up the walls and furniture. I saw no UFOs and no creatures, but I really saw these marks form on the cedar siding.

How long did this last, or is it still going on?

It went on from 1973 to 1978. I filmed the phenomena and wrote it up in a journal, but ufologists were not too interested in entity cases back then. They were all hardware guys.

Your book is like a travel guide to these haunted places. Are people always welcome in these places?

Most are public places, but there are some where you need permission. These are plainly idnetified plus I give a visiting guidelines in the intro.

There are places where you have to use good sense, like the desert or high crime areas. But ghosts and aliens are not going to hurt you. At least that's what I've found.

Did you gain any insight to the paranormal in your study of these haunted places?

There seem to be three main characteristics of the paranormal. 1: it involves phenomena of light, such as glowing balls, mists, UFOs, etc. 2: there is a dissolution of boundaries in the observer where he experiences something outside his belief in what is possible. 3: there is a higher or different intelligence at work or sensed in these cases.

So there are "others" you're saying?

The intelligence sensed in these cases is very independent from human desires and needs, but whether it is alien or archetypal or spiritual in nature I cannot say.
