Welcome to High Strangeness! Stanton Friedman is our guest tonight. A physicist and longtime UFO researcher, he is co-uathor of a book on the Roswell Incident, and, most recently, of TOP SECRET/MAJIC, from Marlowe & Company.

MJ, or Majestic-12, is an alleged supersecret agency that came into existence in the wake of the Roswell Incident, the alleged crash of a UFO near Roswell, New Mexico, in the summer of 1947.

Hi, Stan! Briefly, what is MJ-12 supposed to be?

Operation Majestic 12, or MJ-12, or Majic-12, was the group established by President Truman on Sept. 24 1947 to deal with the wreackage and bodies of a flying saucer recovered near Roswell that July.

As you're aware, Roswell has been encircled by controversy of late. First, there was the alien autopsy film and most recently a piece of debris which turned out to be from a jeweler's junkyard. How do we know that MJ-12 doesn't fall into the same category?

I spent 12 years on the MJ-12 operation and been to 15 archives. My new book has 272 pages...There is no comparison between a piece of metal on your doorstep and a detailed investigation. FYI, a person showed up with a framed piece of metal that he said came from a second party who supposedly got it from a third party who supposedly was at Roswell. The initial test showed copper and silver but nothing remarkable.

I devote an entire chapter in Top Secret/Magic to problems with the Alien Autopsy, which I have been following since day two. I studied all the claims, they all turned out to be untrue. For instance, President was not visible from the "film," as claimed, and he was not in Dallas at the time. And Mr. Barnett, the proclaimed photographer, died in 1967 --and was not in the military. The film was supposedly bought directly from the photographer in 1994, and Barnett was not in the military.

But my point is, Roswell represents 'prime time,' a juicy target for anyone wanting instant recognition. No one would have put forth pieces of a UFO crash from, say, Truth or Consequences, NM. In other words, we've got two known hoaxes associated with Roswell, how do we know MJ-12 wasn't the first and maybe the best?

I know that the MJ-12 documents, describing the MJ-12 group, were not hoaxes because of my investigation. I can't see any connection between current hoaxes and initial discovery, made before the case was well known. Let me use an analogy. After a big crime, police get many false confessions. That does mean there was no crime.

Aside from the intitial MJ-12 documents that first surfaced, you reproduce a second set in your new book, which date from April of 1954. They reference Area 51 and S-4, now well-known. Do you have any evidence that either was referred to by that designation as early as 1954?

Yes, there is evidence. We found a reference to those areas prior to 1954 in the literature.

Regretfully, my time is up --but I look forward to doing this again. Omni Productions tells me they have now opened the chat to the public.

That's most interesting, and a detail I hadn't been aware of. Maybe we can pursue this further at some other time? I know you'd be willing to continue answering questions, but we've run out of time. For those who tuned in, we apologize for the early difficulties. We could go on, but it's after midnight Friedman time. Stan, thanks for staying up! The book is TOP SECRET/MAJIC by Stanton Friedman. The publisher is Marlowe and Company, ISBN 1-56924-830-3. Thanks again, Stan! Will you come back sometime?
