Welcome to High Strangeness! My name is Dennis Stacy and our guest tonight is Kevin Randle. Kevin has out four new books this year: "The Randle Report: UFOs in the 1990s" (M. Evans & Co.), "Conspiracy of Silence" (Avon Books), "Project Blue Book - Exposed" (Marlowe & Co.) and, with Russ Estes , "Faces of the Visitors" (Simon & Schuster).

Kevin, let me ask you: What's this newest book about?

It is a look at the reports of alien creatures made since the beginning of the modern UFO era, that is, 1947. We look at the CE-III reports, the contactees, the abductees, and even the reports and photographs that have been offered as proof. It's a comprehensive look at this one aspect of the phenomenon.

How many types of entities are involved, roughly?

The book contains not only the 125 drawings, but short descriptions of the events that surrounded the sighting. It also provides additional source material so that those who are interested can look up more information.

You mentioned photographs of entities . . . how many fall into this category?

That section contains about thirteen photos. They range from those surrounding the Roswell case, the 1948 "Tomato Man" pictures, to a little "alien" photographed in Spain. The documentation that goes with each of the photographs is not good. It means that most of the photographs we have of alien entities are not considered to have have high credibility.

What specific example of an entity case would you cite as fairly credible and why?

Well, naturally, I would elect the Roswell case, but the aspect of it from the military end. Edwin Easley, Patrick Saunders, et. al. because of their credibility. If we go beyond that I kind of like the Kelly-Hopkinsville report from 1955, but only because of the number of witnesses and the physical evidence involved. That is, the number of holes that Kelly and friends shot in the house in their attempt to repel the alien creatures. The Air Force excuse that they didn't investigate the case, though Air Force officers did go to interview the witnesses is fairly weak. It is an interesting case.

How do you account for the wide variety of fantastical creatures that have been reported over the years? Can there really be that many alien species dropping by?

I don't account for it. One of the purposes of the book was to show that "grays" don't make up 85% of the reported creatures as has been suggested. I could point out that we have a wide variety of human types that, if we put one of each on a craft to land on another planet would give rise to a variety entity reports. Clearly, as we point out in the book, not all the cases are reliable. We're reporting what has been suggested for fifty years. No, I don't think we have that many alien races visiting us.

Let's turn to "The Randle Report: UFOs in the 1990s," which I very much enjoyed, BTW. You point out some current trends and circumstances which don't exactly reflect well on contemporary ufology. Could you review a couple of those here?

I've encountered an "internal" error so I don't know how much of the last answer appeared, if any at all. I had suggested that we, in the UFO community, too often reject science when science suggests we are wrong. The Walton abduction case is a good example because of the various polygraph tests taken, and failed. He apparenlty has passed the latest, it was suggested to me that he is now so comfortable telling the tale that the test is meaningless. We have to look at all the information carefully and decide what we find persuasive.

One aspect you raise in passing is the problem with credentials, faked credentials in particular. Not only among witnesses, but also among ufologists themselves. What does it take, today, to be a ufologist, and should it take more before the general public takes any of us seriously?

Sorry, I was AOLed (that is, they signed me off). Credentials are an interesting aspect to the UFO field. It takes nothing to be a UFOlogist other than a desire to be one. There are training programs that are helpful . . . military, aviation, psychology, the hard sciences. But the bottom line is that no real credential is necessary. I think that anyone with good common sense, a desire to learn the truth, would be of value to the field. But we shouldn't get so wound up in credentials that we don't listen to the message. Russ Estes produced a video tape, Quality of the Messager which addresses the problem and why we should look not only at the messenger but also the message.

In the context of messenger and message, having spent a great deal of time yourself on the Roswell case, what do you make of the fantastical claims of one Col. Philip Corso, who says alien technology recovered at Roswell, led to the development of the integrated circuit, the laser, and numerous other new technologies?

Corso has made a number of claims that have not checked out. I find his book filled with errors and there really isn't anything new in it. It appears that he read everything on the Internet, all the other Roswell books, watched the TV documentaries, and then pulled it together in a not very cohesive whole. I've heard him endorse the Philadelphia Experiment, claiming that he had seen the case files. He has said that he shut down the radars at White Sands after meeting aliens. And he talked about a working time machine, not the speculation that he claims he meant. I just don't believe what he has to say.

But he is a retired Army Colonel and who he says he was. Do you still accept, as more truthful and accurate, Frank Kaufmann's claims, especially the location of the crash site north of town on the Hub Corn ranch?

AOL-willing, maybe we'll get an answer. But we are out of time. Kevin, I want to thank you for taking time out of your schedule to talk with us. It's been most enjoyable! For High Strangeness, this has been Dennis Stacy. Goodnight!

Yes, he is who he says he was, but there seem to be some problems with how to interpret his military career. I've seen part of that file. He was a major in 1945 and didn't make lieutenant colonel for a long time. That is somewhat worrisome, not to mention the things he has said that simply do not check out. At the moment, I have no solid reason to distrust Frank Kaufmann. There have been a lot of things said about him that simply are the result of the political agendas inside the UFO community. Frank has provided some documentation to back his claims. I would like to see more, and have been told there is more. We've got to check all this out. But Frank is not stand alone. He has provided information that has been verified through other sources.
