Welcome, everyone, to another edition of Infinities! Rob Killheffer here, senior editor of Omni, and I'll be your host tonight. My guest is the multi-talented Nina L. Diamond, author of PURIFY YOUR BODY, an easy-to-use guide to helping your body cleanse itself of the toxins it encounters from a variety of sources -- stress, pollutants, food additives, etc. etc. etc. Welcome, Nina! /ga

Hi Marla, I'm glad you're here. That helps to offset the crazy way the computer world is acting this evening as we keep getting booted off. By the way, Rob, Marla and I went to high school together in Miami Beach millions of moons ago and she's in NY now.

I hope the net isn't booting you too often, Nina. It was so stable for most of our practice session!

Viewers, it would help if you'd append your names to your messages, so we can tell who you are. Either put it before your message (like this: Ed_Wertzel: Hi Nina!) or at the end (like this: Hi Nina! -- Ed Wurtzel). Thanks!

Nina, to start us off, why don't you tell us a little about what you mean by "detoxing" -- what sorts of toxins are we trying to remove, and where do they come from? /ga

The toxins that your body deals with internally just as a matter of daily operations as well as the ones it encounters from the outside. Most of us pay attention to the external ones but forget about whether or not things are going smoothly internally./ga

Can you give us an example or two of each type? What are some common external toxins, and some common internal ones? /ga

For instance, your lymphatic system is your body's drainage system and if it's not going smoothly or is clogged you can get toxic and puffy and icky very quickly. Your liver is your body's filter, much like the one in your fish tank. If your liver is overburdened, like by too much alcohol or medication, then you will not be able to filter out toxins. As for externally....there are the usual toxic bad guys we all know about, and there are those we may not be awarwe of, like natural toxins present in some veggies, toxins that aren't killed by cooking. White mushrooms have three natural toxins, and only two are killed by cooking, so eating these little fellas raw ain't such a great idea./ga

When you say "toxins," you're not just talking about things we commonly think of as poisons, but also about things like caffeine or chemicals produced naturally by our bodies, right? /ga

One of the nifty things your body is doing while you are waiting the infinite amount of time it takes to see this message is detoxing. In with the good, out with the bad, all the time. So, you can literally become poisoned internally when your body isn't doing its job right because systems may be stressed or not running smoothly. The external toxins we bring in, chemicals and what we call natural toxins because they aren't made by humankind, but by nature, just add more detoxing burdens to our bodies./ga

One of the things you talk about in your book are sources of toxicity that may be less obvious to us: "toxic" relationships and people. What do you mean by that? /ga

Everything that happens to us emotionally directly affects our health. So, when we're dealing with toxic people or toxic situations, we are at a higher risk of ill health. Doctors first admitted this when they began equating stress with conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease and ulcers. Whatever is toxic in your life translates into stress that does a number on your physical well-being, too, and can produce any number of conditions and illnesses, not just the three I mentioned. The best way to deal with this is to prevent as much as possible. To detox your life of toxic people and situations. I know, it's easier said than done, but believe me...it's worth it, and you really are in much better emotional and physical shape after some good, old-fashioned detoxing of toxic folks and situations./ga

Let's take a look at one or two of the specific toxic situations you discuss in your book. Jet lag, for example. What are the toxic effects of jet lag, specifically, and what do you recommend people do to avoid and/or detox from those effects? /ga

Nina, you there? It appears our guest may have been booted. Viewers, if you have any questions, feel free to post them now. Nina will answer them when she gets back into the room. /ga

I have to assume that Nina's run into some technical troubles. I'll hang around until the end of the show -- 10:00 EDT -- in case she gets back on, but it seems our show may have been cut short. Sorry all. /ga

Hi, Nina, and welcome back to the land of the ... living? The land of the typing, in any event. We haven't got a whole lot of time left, but why don't you try to tackle that question I asked before: take a specific example, like jet lag -- what are its toxic effects, and how does one detox from them? /ga

Boost your immune system before flying. Take vitamin C and the herb echinacea in liquid form for a few days and stay on it during trip. When you arrive switch to the local time immediately and stay on it even if it means having a very late night the first day. You'll adjust very quickly that way.

Are there some recommendations you would make in general, things people should do every day to cut down on their toxicity? /ga

Massage is great to keep lymph system clear. Dandelion root capsules will detox your liver and every cell of your body./ga

We're just about out of time. Sorry the chat has been so plagued by technical glitches. One last question, Nina: what are some of the symptoms of toxicity? How does someone know they're suffering from an excess of toxins? /ga

Depands on your exposure and what kind of toxin it is, and sometimes you have to play detective. Symptoms could be gastrointestinal or just about anything abnormal, or swelling, or just plain old death if it's gobs of toxic waste./ga

Ugh -- that's pretty serious. At any rate, thanks for the good advice, Nina, and for soldiering on through all the technical trouble. Hope it wasn't too harrowing! Folks, that's all for tonight's edition of Infinities. Join us next week when host Sherry Baker will chat with David Harry Grinspoon about the planet Venus. Could there be life there? And might humans someday walk its scalded plateaus? Tune in and find out. Till then, goodnight!
