Merry Pranksters Ken Kesey and Ken Babbs
on "Twister" and Rebellion

Welcome. Tonight as part of our special issue on rebellion our guests are Ken Kesey -- author of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Sometimes A Great Notion" and "Sailor Song" among others and his partner in time and merry pranks, Ken Babbs.

Back in the Sixties, Kesey, Babbs and the other Merry Pranksters virtually redefined cultural rebellion for our times -- exploring human consciousness through psychedelics and living life 'here and now' on their own terms with their own rules.

Kesey and Babbs are currently finishing work on "Twister." Not to be confused with the recent movie of the same title, Kesey's "Twister" is a musical play that was performed by Kesey, Babbs and others and in Prankster tradition videotaped. It will be published in book and video form by Viking next Fall.

"Twister," which was created to be performed as ritual, involving the full participation of the audience, is more than just an interactive play, it's a rebellious statement against 'entertainment' as we know it. Are you ready to go FURTHUR?

Remember, in The Wild Ones, this girl asks Brando: What are you rebelling against? And he says, what do you have? This is not our kind of rebellion. Our rebellion is in the Pranskter mode -- rebellion within some kind of system, within the system that exists. Otherwise your rebellion never goes beyond you. It's like typing a novel and not putting paper in the typewriter.

We're like people on top of a train, and the train is going down a grade. We see a turn coming up, and we know the train can't make it. Some try to convince the conductor to slow down. All of you seem to be relating victory with numbers. That the amount of people is for something indicates whether it is true or not. Our strategy: To encourage and assist people. There was a wreck on the freeway up here a couple of days ago. The fire engines were out with their flares very fast. The evil force, which is definitely out there --anyone who pays attention knows it exists-- wants people fighting. Women who are for and against abortion are often equally righteous. But the evil force doesn't care. The evil force just want them to fight. These women really have a lot in common. The issue should not really be abortion, but birth control --it should be imposed on the man, not just the women. It's easier to take the bullets out of the gun then check the target.

Of course there are women here...and we vote....and we work and we don't like being dictated to and we are all trying to find our way. Hopefully to be a part of the HUMAN race. Why is it that at the front of so many right-to-life rallies there are so many middle-aged men?

In the last hundred years the human race has truly been able to connect all over the globe. It was what Leary was talking aabout: One mind. The human brain. All in touch with each other almost instantaneously. It makes you sick to your stomach just thinking about it. You need to fall back on things to clear your mind --milking the cows, or food shopping.

On election night we'll have a bulletin board and a bunch of 800 lines open. This will celebrate whatever happens --with music, poetry, cyberjamming and words. We'll hook everyone into the same pot. We can all put vegetables into the same pot and see what it tastes like. People who call on the 800 numbers will be able to call and talk to us, personally, and we can evey put them back out over the Internet. We can see them and they can see us --this is an ongoing, live form. There's nothing more fun than going somewhere and relating to people you don't know on a nonverbal basis. Doing music together. Or dancing together.

I like Smith and Wesson. I hope Brugerre wins, but there's not that much difference between them. Our good friend, Jerry Rust, should have been running. They didn't think he could win against Smith. People shouldn't not vote for someone just because they think that person can't win. There's no chance of Nader winning, but the vote itself is our victory.
