Before Fairfield and Starett City, Pennsylvania and Flatlands had a huge junkyard, Carvel (and a swamp behind it where people flew radio-controlled airplanes) and the Bat-a-Way and golf driving range. My friends and I used to swipe the rubber-covered hardballs from the Bat-a-Way because a regular horsehide-covered baseball wouldn't last a single inning on a paved schoolyard surface.
