OMNI Visions

Magazine Editors Panel
with Ellen Datlow (OMNI), Gardner Dozois (Asimov's), and Gordon Van Gelder (F&SF)

We had a chat with them on Thursday, May 29, 1997. You can read a transcript here.

Ellen Datlow is the fiction editor of Omni magazine and co-editor (with Terri Windling) of the annual Year's Best Fantasy and Horror. She has also assembled a variety of other anthologies, including the seven-volume OMNI Book of Science Fiction series, A Whisper of Blood, Lethal Kisses, Off Limits, and (with Terri Windling) several volumes of reworked fairy tales, most recently Black Swan, White Raven.

Gardner Dozois is the editor of Asimov's Science Fiction (formerly Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine) and The Year's Best Science Fiction. A perennial winner of the Hugo Award for Best Editor, he has also edited a bewildering number of other anthologies, including Killing Me Softly, Modern Classics of Science Fiction, Modern Classics of Fantasy, and (with Jack Dann) the long-running series of "exclamation point" anthologies, which includes Mermaids!, Unicorns!, Aliens!, and (more recently, without the punctuation) Hackers. He's also an award-winning fiction writer, with stories most recently gathered in the collection Geodesic Dreams.

Gordon Van Gelder recently took over as editor of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, while continuing to hold his position as an editor at St. Martin's Press (where he works on such projects as the Datlow and Windling Year's Best Fantasy and Horror and Dozois' Year's Best Science Fiction). He has been managing editor of The New York Review of Science Fiction, as well as an occasional reviewer and critic of the field.
